West Africa's Sahel region
faces a terrible and severe food crisis caused by the combination of droughts,
failed harvests, and soaring food prices. In a region where families already
live under difficult conditions, the situation is rapidly becoming
life-threatening.
Many communities have
exhausted their food reserves and those who are most vulnerable – children and
women – are at risk of severe hunger.The worst months are still to come, just before the harvest, when family
and village food stocks are at their lowest and food prices are at their
highest.
